My Brand Video | How I Started Living With Less

Hey Reader,

In case you missed it, Friday was my birthday.

My husband Steve planned a lovely low-key evening at a wine bar with friends. But since then, it has not been our best week. Steve is not feeling great. Actually, that's an understatement. He was in the hospital Saturday night with an allergic reaction that brought five nurses and doctors into our room really quickly after we arrived. Neither of us realized how serious his symptoms were until they explained it. And as we backtracked the week, it turns out wine could have been a trigger. He's ok, but we're still figuring out what's going on. So, we're staying close to home and cancelled all caregiving travel for my dad. (I've got great support there too.)

If you're new to my list, let me explain a little further. My dad has cancer. We lost my father-in-law and mother-in-law last fall. Life has given us a healthy dose of "stuff behind the stuff." And I write about it once a week in addition to my email for professional organizers and entrepreneurs. (You might be getting both, so welcome!)

Here's what I know. Life is often the reason for clutter and disorganization. I walked this journey with widows, widowers, empty nesters, overwhelmed working moms, and more. I know how it happens. And also how to get out of it. The professional organizers I coach know how to help too.

And they would all agree with me on this fact. The sanctuary of my clutter-free home is the one thing getting me through all this. It reminds me of why I started Simply Enough over ten years ago.

And it also reminds me that I've been sitting on sharing something with you for a year now. Why? Hmm...probably some of that annoying imposter syndrome. I still get it from time to time.

I put together this video with the help of some very talented entrepreneurs, Mariana Henninger, Alexis Doty, and Chris Seward, to share my story. From a busy working mom doing the daycare dash, to buying stuff at Target I didn't need, to a stressed-out migraine sufferer, to a successful entrepreneur who slowed down enough to make sure she didn't miss living life in the process - that's what this video is all about.

It starts in a Target parking lot, in the pouring rain. It's the moment everything changed for me. And it's still why I do this work today.

My business looks different now. But my story hasn't changed.

If there's something you've been sitting on sharing, I hope this video gives you a little push.

Own less. Live more.

Hey Reader, Recently, two of my clients came to me about to make the same mistake. Each had a potential client lined up. And each had already decided what that client could afford, and how she would feel about the price. They were discounting and second-guessing their price before they ever talked to her. Before they got to know her. Both of them closed. Neither client batted an eye at the price. More often than not, I find that organizers, and especially women entrepreneurs, second-guess the...

Hey Reader, I don't hide the fact that I think most people are overbuying at stores like Costco and Sam's Club. I've worked with more clients on freezer cleanouts than I can count. So much of it is waste. This week, one client estimated she threw out $150 worth of old meat. And she found a brisket she forgot about, right after she bought another one for Sunday dinner. She's starting to see the wisdom of my line of thinking. Now she's buying more food on demand, with a meal plan. It's not just...

Hey Reader, The best marketing advice I can give you is four words long. Go talk to people. It's the thread running through almost every call I've had this month. With my clients, and with the business owners I meet on discovery calls. They know they need more clients. And talking to people is the part they keep putting off. So they go to another networking event. They connect with another vendor. They update the website one more time. Busy — but not with the right things. It all feels...
