The gift that ends up in my car every January

Hey Reader,

I've spent ten years in other people's kitchens, which means I see the gifts that worked and the ones that didn't.

Many people love shopping and gift-giving, especially at the holidays. And recipients know this about the gift-giver. That's what makes the items hard to get rid of later.

A lot of the gifts that a professional organizer donates are because someone felt guilty.

Last year, one of my clients paid for a cleaning lady for each of her three daughters who were married with little kids. They were all over the moon to receive this gift from their mom.

No one had to find a home for it.

Here is what I want you to know before you buy anything this year:

  • Ask yourself where it will live. If you can't picture the exact spot in their house, don't buy it.
  • Don't give someone a hobby they didn't ask for. The sourdough kit, the yoga mat, the gardening set.
  • I always suggest consumables. Coffee, olive oil, and dark chocolate.
  • Avoid anything that needs its own storage. A gift that lives in a bin eleven months out of the year is one more thing to find a home for.
  • Always include a gift receipt. And tell them, when they open it, that you will not be offended if they return or exchange it.

The goal isn't to buy nothing, but rather to be intentional and thoughtful about what you buy.

I wrote the whole list out, including what to do when you still want something to wrap.

I choose experiences not stuff, because what we have is simply enough.

P.S. What intentional gift are you giving this year?

Hey Reader, Almost every organizer I coach has a woman in her head she wants to help. A neighbor. A sister-in-law. A young mom with three kids and a kitchen she has lost control of. A real problem and no budget. I have one too. Here's what I watch happen next. She builds her whole business around that woman. Nine months in, nothing has sold. So she decides her offer is wrong. She changes it once, twice, five times. Eventually she stops and calls it a failed business. Or worse yet, treats it...

Hey Reader, I'm taking my coaching on the road again. First stop: checking on dad and dropping off Zeke the cat. We're meeting friends for a long weekend in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. There's nothing like New England in the fall. 🍁 On Tuesday, I had seven coaching calls. And the same thing came up in four of them. Not pricing. Not marketing. Not finding clients. Talking about their own work. One client rated her confidence at a 5 out of 10. She's a professional organizer. She did everything I...

Hey Reader, This week I had two goals: rest, and show up well for my clients. If you've been following along, I've been on the road a lot. It felt so good to be home. Steve's back after two weeks away. We're headed to see Zack at college today. Our house is peaceful, and I missed it. I didn't take any new client calls this week. And a part of me felt guilty about that, like I should double-check that I wasn't being lazy. I told my coach. He laughed at me. My roster is strong right now, and...
